The honest take
Book Raffles Dubai unless the beach is the whole point. At $279 versus $895 for the Mandarin Oriental Jumeira, Raffles gives you three restaurants, a nightclub, a spa and a pool in Wafi for a fraction of the cost, with more reviews behind it. The Mandarin Oriental charges for a beachfront address on Jumeirah Road with five outdoor pools and a Tasca outpost, which is a genuinely different holiday, not just a pricier version of the same one.
The look and the feel

This is Kerzner-era beach architecture on Jumeirah Road, all low white villas and palm-lined pathways running down to the Gulf, with the Mandarin Oriental brand's usual restraint layered over it: pale stone, dark timber screens, a lobby that stays quiet and cool against the heat outside. Five outdoor pools scattered through the grounds and a spa built for whole afternoons rather than an hour on a treatment table. Tasca brings Portuguese cooking to a hotel that otherwise plays it fairly international, and the crowd is beach-holiday money rather than business travellers passing through.
Right for anyone who wants a beach resort stay with proper pool and spa acreage and is happy to pay for the Jumeirah Road address.
Raffles Dubai
Raffles Dubai is unmistakable from the road: a black glass pyramid rising over Wafi, an Egyptian-revival theme park of a building with obelisks and hieroglyph-patterned marble in the public areas, built in the mid-2000s as part of the wider Wafi complex. Inside it settles into fairly standard five-star gloss, brass fittings, a big central atrium, three restaurants and a nightclub that gives the place real nightlife energy after dark, unusual for a hotel this theatrical. It draws a mix of tourists drawn to the pyramid itself and a local crowd out for the bars.
Right for anyone who wants a landmark building, nightlife on site, and change left over from the price of the room alone.
Raffles has no beachfront and no equivalent of five separate outdoor pools; it trades sea and sand for a city-centre pyramid with a nightclub and three restaurants instead.
The Raffles pyramid is the more memorable thing to stand inside, a genuine piece of architectural theatre, while the Mandarin Oriental is better designed for actually relaxing.

Excellent hotel. Very clean. Our room was spacious and beautiful. Staff cleaned room at least once a day and turned down bed 1-2 times. There was some construction on one of the restaurants so it wasn’t open but the Netsu was good if you like that style. Pool staff was great. Pool extremely clean. The Club lounge was my favorite, down the money to get access to it.
