The honest take

Book the Ritz-Carlton, Millenia Singapore: it's cheaper at $467 versus $575, rated higher (9.2 vs 9), and backed by far more reviews (2,767 vs 784). It has a hot tub and golf access the JW Marriott lacks, and every room comes with skyline views over Marina Bay. The JW Marriott's trump card is its rooftop, plus two infinity pools and sky gardens, and a location closer to the National Gallery and the arts district. For most travellers the Ritz-Carlton's combination of price, reputation and views makes it the easier call.

The look and the feel

JW Marriott Hotel Singapore South Beach

The South Beach tower was designed by a team including Norman Foster's practice for the masterplan, with the hotel itself leaning into a slick, dark-toned contemporary look: black stone, brass accents, moody lighting in the lobby that reads more nightclub than colonial hotel. The two sky gardens and infinity pools are the design centrepiece, cantilevered structures that catch the wind and the skyline both. It's a hotel built for the Instagram generation of Marina Bay visitors, with the Esplanade and the arts district a short walk away.

Guests who want a rooftop pool scene and a base within walking distance of the National Gallery and Esplanade.

The Ritz-Carlton, Millenia Singapore

The Ritz-Carlton Millenia sits low and wide along Marina Bay, its interiors built around a serious contemporary art collection, works by Frank Stella and Dale Chihuly among others scattered through the public spaces. The signature design trick is the diamond-shaped windows that give every guest room a wide, unobstructed skyline view rather than a slice of it. The lobby is calm rather than flashy, marble and warm wood, and the level-32 Club Lounge with its limousine transfers signals an older, more established idea of Singapore luxury than the newer towers nearby.

Guests who want art on the walls, guaranteed skyline views, and the quieter, more traditional register of Ritz-Carlton service.

Choosing the cheaper Ritz-Carlton over the JW Marriott means giving up the rooftop, though it gains a hot tub and golf access the JW Marriott doesn't offer.

The Ritz-Carlton is the more considered piece of design, its art collection and windowed views giving it a depth the JW Marriott's slicker, pool-centric aesthetic doesn't quite match.

“Rele's stay @Jw Marriot South beach”

Nice hotel, they have nice food, great breakfast food selection. Even though breakfast tends to be busy. Amazing amenities from the pool to the fitness area. They have nice cozy bar inside the hotel and one just next door to the hotel. Seamless checking in and out.

“only stayed for two nights, wish we had more time there.”
