The honest take

Raffles Singapore is the one to book if the point of the trip is the hotel itself: colonial-era grandeur, 24-hour butlers, a 9.6 rating from 590 guests, at $1,585 a night. JW Marriott South Beach, 200 metres up the same road, is nearly $1,200 cheaper at $414, rated 9 from a larger pool of 784 reviews, and comes with two infinity pools and sky gardens. Both sit in the same stretch of Beach Road near the arts district and Marina Bay, so location is a wash. The choice is really between paying for pedigree and service, or banking the saving on a slicker, newer building.

The look and the feel

Raffles Singapore

Raffles is the 1887 colonial hotel that gave the world the Singapore Sling, all whitewashed Victorian façade, palms, and the Long Bar's peanut shells on the floor. The suites run to teak flooring and fine oriental carpets, with verandahs and separate parlour rooms rather than standard hotel layouts, and the whole place is staffed by butlers rather than concierges. It's slow, formal, and self-consciously historic, the kind of hotel where the building is the attraction and the courtyard gardens do a lot of the work.

Raffles suits guests who want the hotel to be the destination, with butler service and colonial-era atmosphere justifying the price.

JW Marriott Hotel Singapore South Beach

South Beach is a contemporary tower, part of a mixed-use development that folds a 1930s military heritage building into a glass-and-steel structure with two sky gardens threading between the blocks. Inside it's glossy and current rather than nostalgic: two infinity pools, a fitness centre, stylish rooms aimed at guests who want design without ceremony. It reads as a city hotel built for photographs of the skyline, not for lingering in a historic parlour.

South Beach suits guests who want a strong, contemporary five-star base near Marina Bay and the arts district without paying heritage prices.

At $414 against $1,585, South Beach's only listed gap is the hot tub Raffles offers; otherwise it matches or beats Raffles on pools and fitness facilities, so the real cost of choosing Raffles is the historic name, the suite-style rooms, and the butler service, not a facilities shortfall.

Raffles is the more beautiful and characterful building to actually stand in, verandahs, teak, and 19th-century atmosphere that no glass tower can replicate.

“Stunning hotel and service but check out disaster!”

This is a stunning hotel, the staff are all amazing, especially the butlers that go above and beyond. The locations and facilities could not be better and the dining options delicious.

Unfortunately, after a wonderful stay, I was left disappointed by the check out process - they allowed a later check out by 1 hour but when I arrived to process then check out the team were not ready - they had not updated all my incidentals that I highlighted on the statement. I had to leave so they said they would em

“Rele's stay @Jw Marriot South beach”

Nice hotel, they have nice food, great breakfast food selection. Even though breakfast tends to be busy. Amazing amenities from the pool to the fitness area. They have nice cozy bar inside the hotel and one just next door to the hotel. Seamless checking in and out.
