Raffles Singapore, at $1,662, sits on Beach Road in the civic district and carries a 9.6 from 590 reviews, while Capella, on Sentosa Island, runs $1,207 with a 9.5 from 279 reviews. Both are five-star and excellent, so this is really about geography and mood: city landmark versus island retreat. Capella is the better-value booking by a clear margin if the rainforest setting and beach access matter more to you than being where the Singapore Sling was born. Raffles has a rooftop the other lacks; Capella counters with pet-friendliness, golf access and a beach.
Raffles is the 1887 colonial hotel that gave Singapore its most famous export, the Singapore Sling, mixed at the Long Bar under slow-turning fans and a floor scattered with peanut shells. The suites keep to that period language: teak flooring, oriental carpets, verandahs, black-and-white shutters looking onto tropical courtyards. Public rooms run to potted palms, cane furniture and white colonnades, the whole place restored by Alexandra Champalimaud with a deliberate hand toward Raffles' Victorian-Edwardian bones rather than a hotel pastiche of them. It draws a crowd that wants Singapore's history in the room with them, not just nearby.
Raffles suits travellers who want to be inside Singapore's colonial history, in the city centre, near the CBD and the Padang.
Capella occupies restored colonial black-and-white bungalows on Sentosa, reworked by Norman Foster into a low, dark-timbered resort set into rainforest canopy, with three pools stepping down toward the sea. The interiors, done by Jaya Ibrahim, lean into deep woods, stone and quiet Asian-colonial restraint rather than Raffles' overt period detail, so rooms feel more like a private retreat than a public monument. Sea and garden views, in-room refreshments, garment pressing, and the sense of being tucked away from the city entirely define the stay more than any single striking room.
Capella suits those after a resort escape with beach, pools and rainforest quiet, less concerned with being downtown.
Choosing Capella over Raffles means giving up the rooftop and the address in the historic city core, trading Beach Road's colonnades and Long Bar for an island retreat six kilometres away.
Raffles is the more characterful place to stand still in, its Long Bar and colonnaded courtyards carrying two centuries of specific Singapore history that Capella's calmer, more contemporary luxury does not attempt to match.

“Stunning hotel and service but check out disaster!”
This is a stunning hotel, the staff are all amazing, especially the butlers that go above and beyond. The locations and facilities could not be better and the dining options delicious.
Unfortunately, after a wonderful stay, I was left disappointed by the check out process - they allowed a later check out by 1 hour but when I arrived to process then check out the team were not ready - they had not updated all my incidentals that I highlighted on the statement. I had to leave so they said they would em
Staff was friendly, approachable and helpful at all levels of communication throughout and leading up to our stay. The villa was immaculate, and we appreciated the high level of attention to detail. 10/10 recommend to anyone who wants a getaway oasis.
