The honest take

Both sit near the Quirinale, 0.8km apart, and both are excellent, but they're different animals. Villa Spalletti Trivelli is a small former private residence with a 9.8 rating from a modest 297 reviews, at $1331 a night. The St. Regis Rome is a grand five-star landmark, slightly cheaper at $1044, rated 9.4 from 330 reviews, and it takes pets, which the villa doesn't. If you want a private-house feel and don't mind paying more for it, book the villa; if you want a proper grand hotel address and a lower rate, take the St. Regis.

The look and the feel

Villa Spalletti Trivelli

This was once the private villa of the Spalletti Trivelli family, and it still reads as a house rather than a hotel: a handful of rooms, a walled garden, antiques mixed with contemporary upholstery rather than uniform hotel-chain furnishing. The public rooms are salons, not lobbies — parquet floors, gilt mirrors, family portraits, the kind of clutter that comes from generations rather than a design brief. Breakfast on the garden terrace in the morning light, with the city's noise kept outside the walls, is the whole point of staying here.

Right for travellers who want a quiet, almost private house experience with a garden, and don't mind paying a premium for scale to be small.

The St. Regis Rome

The St. Regis Rome occupies the 1894 Palazzo built by César Ritz, all marble columns, crystal chandeliers, and a grand staircase that announces itself the moment you walk in from Via Vittorio Emanuele Orlando. It's a proper Belle Époque hotel — high ceilinged, formally dressed staff, a piano bar, a scale meant to impress rather than to feel domestic. The rooms lean toward classic opulence: brocade, gilt frames, heavy drapery, with modern tech worked in rather than foregrounded.

Right for travellers who want a grand historic hotel with full five-star infrastructure, better value per night, and the option to bring a pet.

The St. Regis, for less money, doesn't offer the hot tub the villa has; the villa in turn doesn't accept pets, which the St. Regis allows.

The villa is the more characterful place to actually sit and linger, precisely because it doesn't feel designed to impress — it feels lived in, which is rarer and harder to fake than Belle Époque marble.

“Feel like I stayed in a castle! 🥰”

It’s a extremely exquisite place well renovated with the charm of a small castle! Breakfast was great and chic bathrooms modernized and you miss nothing! Alot of small attention ! Romantic moments for sure !

“Super cool experience”

Super cool, antique and very well kept. You feel like you are inside someone’s home with all the furniture , clocks and photos. Warm staff. Great facilities at the roof top terrace. You’re in the centre so can walk anywhere and the food was amazing!

It is pricey. The room had a strong “old smell” but you get used to it.

“Lovely and calm boutique hotel in central Rome.”

I chose Villa Spalletti Trivelli for my initial days in Italy as a calm retreat where I could be cosy and comfortable while dealing with jetlag caused by a 9-hour time difference, and it was very good for this. The Renaissance tapestries hanging in the main rooms were spectacular, and the public rooms were spacious and relaxed, as in a beautiful country house. Lovely open drinks bar every evening and free mini-bar i

There was one day during my stay when the public areas and garden were unavailable to me in the evening due to a party for the Peruvian embassy, and as Villa Spalletti Trivelli is only a block from the presidential palace and other important buildings of government, I suppose this sort of thing can be expected. “Over the Top!”

My wife and I have had the pleasure of staying at high-end hotels around the world for the lat 25 years. The St. Regis Rome was probably the pinnacle of all our past experiences. Unsurpassed staff, spectacular room, not a thing out of place, And not a single issue of even minor consequence arose during our entire visit. We've never experienced more friendly and helpful personnel, special kudos to server Marah an

“Fantastic Experience at St. Regis Rome!”

St. Regis Rome provided the best hotel stay that my family has ever had. From the moment we were welcomed at check-in, the experience was perfect in every way. We recently stayed for a few nights on either end of a side trip to another region of Italy, and the entire staff - from the head of guest relations to housekeeping - made it feel like our home away from home. We will never stay anywhere else in Rome, and pl
