The honest take
Villa Spalletti Trivelli is $340 cheaper a night, rated higher by nearly every guest (9.8 vs 9.4), and comes with a bar, hot tub and parking the Hassler doesn't list. The Hassler counters with a rooftop and the single best address in Rome, at the top of the Spanish Steps. If you want a private villa experience and better value, book Villa Spalletti Trivelli; if the rooftop view and that exact piazza matter more than the price gap, book the Hassler.
The look and the feel
Villa Spalletti Trivelli
A former private villa near the Quirinale, run more like a grand house than a hotel: parquet floors, gilt mirrors, a walled garden where breakfast is served under umbrellas. Rooms mix antiques with contemporary upholstery rather than going full period pastiche, so it reads as lived-in rather than museum-set. The spa is tucked into what would once have been service rooms - small, warm-lit, a Turkish bath and sauna rather than a sprawling wellness floor. It draws people who want quiet and discretion over spectacle, closer to staying with wealthy relatives than checking into a five-star.
Travellers who want a quiet, garden-set villa with personal service and don't need to be steps from the Spanish Steps.
Hassler Roma
The Hassler sits at the top of the Spanish Steps with the kind of view that has made its rooftop restaurant, Imàgo, a fixture of Roman postcards - floodlit domes and terracotta rooftops stretching to St Peter's. The lobby is old-school grand hotel: marble, chandeliers, a hushed piano-bar energy that fills after dinner. It has been in the same family's hands for generations, and the interiors lean toward classic Roman luxury rather than anything experimental - brocade, dark wood, gilt frames. It draws a crowd that wants to be exactly at the address, tourists and old-money travellers alike, paying for the postcode as much as the room.
Travellers who want the rooftop view over Rome and the prestige of sleeping right at Piazza di Spagna.
Booking the cheaper Villa Spalletti Trivelli means giving up the Hassler's rooftop and its view, along with the five-star scale and the address directly on the Spanish Steps.
Villa Spalletti Trivelli is the more beautiful place to actually sit and be - a real garden, real quiet, a house rather than an institution - while the Hassler's advantage is entirely the view from its roof.

It’s a extremely exquisite place well renovated with the charm of a small castle! Breakfast was great and chic bathrooms modernized and you miss nothing! Alot of small attention ! Romantic moments for sure !

“Super cool experience”
Super cool, antique and very well kept. You feel like you are inside someone’s home with all the furniture , clocks and photos. Warm staff. Great facilities at the roof top terrace. You’re in the centre so can walk anywhere and the food was amazing!
It is pricey. The room had a strong “old smell” but you get used to it.

“Lovely and calm boutique hotel in central Rome.”
I chose Villa Spalletti Trivelli for my initial days in Italy as a calm retreat where I could be cosy and comfortable while dealing with jetlag caused by a 9-hour time difference, and it was very good for this. The Renaissance tapestries hanging in the main rooms were spectacular, and the public rooms were spacious and relaxed, as in a beautiful country house. Lovely open drinks bar every evening and free mini-bar i
There was one day during my stay when the public areas and garden were unavailable to me in the evening due to a party for the Peruvian embassy, and as Villa Spalletti Trivelli is only a block from the presidential palace and other important buildings of government, I suppose this sort of thing can be expected. I was
We have been coming to this hotel for many years, and we absolutely love the service and the staff. However, this time the room was very dirty. There was visible dust and dirty carpet. We have brought it to the attention of the front desk and hope they deep clean the rooms.
