The honest take

At $1,927 vs $1,926 a night, this is a coin toss on price, so it comes down to what you want around you. Mandarin Oriental Ritz has the indoor pool, vitality pool and steam room that Villa Magna lacks, plus five restaurants under Quique Dacosta. Villa Magna counters with a hot tub the Ritz doesn't list. Both sit within a fifteen-minute walk of each other and score identically with guests, so this is really a choice of building and neighbourhood, not value.

The look and the feel

Rosewood Villa Magna

Villa Magna occupies a 1970s tower set back from the Castellana behind its own gates and gardens, and the interiors lean into that with antique-style furniture set against clean modern lines rather than full period pastiche. Marble bathrooms, laptop safes with chargers, rooms looking either over Serrano's shopfronts or the traffic of the avenue itself. It reads as a business hotel that dressed up: comfortable, discreet, more suited to a deal being closed than a honeymoon being had.

Villa Magna suits guests prioritising Salamanca's shopping streets and a quieter, more corporate calm over spectacle.

Mandarin Oriental Ritz

The Ritz opened in 1910 facing the Prado and the Plaza de la Lealtad, all Belle Époque grandeur, high ceilings, chandeliers and a formality that has softened under Mandarin Oriental's ownership without disappearing. The wellness centre with its indoor and vitality pools sits under the same roof as five separate restaurants and bars, including one led by Quique Dacosta, so the building works as a small self-contained world. It draws guests who want to feel they are staying somewhere with a long memory, not just a good bed.

The Ritz suits guests who want a historic building, museum-district address, and the full spread of pools and dining under one roof.

Villa Magna, at essentially the same price, gives up the indoor pool, vitality pool and steam room the Ritz offers, though it answers with its own hot tub.

The Ritz is the more beautiful place to stand in, simply because its 1910 bones and Prado-facing plaza give it a grandeur that Villa Magna's tidy modern tower can't match.

Great location with larger than average rooms. Hotel is very non-descript from the outside but luxurious on the inside. They have a house-car for certain hours that you can get rides in. Very close to shopping & Retiro Park
