The honest take

Hotel da Baixa costs $480 against $1,863 for the Ritz, has a higher guest rating from far more reviews, and sits in the thick of downtown Lisbon by Rossio Square. The Ritz answers with a spa, pool, gym and pet allowance, plus a name and a park view Hotel da Baixa can't match. For most travellers the difference in price buys scale and ceremony, not a better stay, so book Hotel da Baixa and spend the savings on dinner and a taxi up to the Ritz Bar for a drink.

The look and the feel

Four Seasons Hotel Ritz Lisbon

Built in 1959 on the edge of Eduardo VII Park, the Ritz Lisbon is a modernist landmark rather than a period pastiche: clean stone facades, a formidable art collection commissioned specifically for the building, and interiors that lean classic Portuguese with azulejos, tapestries and heavy carved wood rather than any fussy gilt. Rooms are large by any standard, most with balconies over the park or the Tagus, and the Varanda Restaurant looks straight down onto the greenery for breakfast. The Ritz Bar's summer terrace is the social centre in warm months, and the spa runs to acupuncture and Ayurveda alongside the usual treatments. It draws an older, monied, mostly international crowd who want quiet formality and staff who remember their names.

Guests who want spa time, a pool, room to bring a pet, and the hush of an established grand hotel set apart from the street.

Hotel da Baixa

Hotel da Baixa occupies a townhouse in the grid of streets between Rossio and the Santa Justa Lift, the kind of address where the Baixa's post-earthquake symmetry is visible from the window. The listing points to a cosier, contemporary fit-out: 4K televisions, Nespresso machines, Bluetooth speakers in rooms that read comfortable rather than grand. Breakfast is a daily buffet with vegetarian and gluten-free options, served in a restaurant it calls cozy rather than ceremonial. It suits people who want to walk out the door into the old city rather than be driven to it.

Travellers who want to be inside the historic centre on foot, at a fraction of the price, without giving up modern room comforts.

Hotel da Baixa has no spa, no pool, no fitness room and doesn't take pets, all of which the Ritz offers as a matter of course.

The Ritz is the more beautiful building to simply stand in, with its commissioned art, park views and proper bar terrace, but Hotel da Baixa puts you inside a livelier, older piece of the city every time you step outside.

“Excellent Service but Bad Food/Accomodation”

First the service and the staff were marvelous. They solve issues fast are smart and on their feet. They live up to the four seasons moto We loved our little gifts and little paste de nata that were provided as gifts. BUT the accomodations are not worthy of the name. Most of the hotel looks, outdated and they seem to have various themes that don't quite make sense. The hotel restaurant where we had breakf

“Fantastic FS experience”

Fantastic hotel from start to end. The responses on the FS app were quick and helpful. While we arrived early they did our best to accommodate us. Rita from the front desk was fantastic as was Rita from the ice cream shop. The bell captains were great as well, anticipating our needs. Quality FS properly. Super friendly and just do a superb job all around.

“Central”

Location - very local. Breakfast is ok.

in toilet they have big big window facing other windows across the street, but the roller blind is half-transparent!!! How??? Why??? Somebody's nail behind the sink in the toilet. And if You add a bed - it is super uncomfortable - you just drop down inside. And the price... - this price is not for the type of hotel. Ov
