The honest take

Book the Savoy if the Thames-side address, the pool and the century of history matter more than the bill: at $1,113 a night it's the pricier stay but the more storied one, on the Strand by Covent Garden and the river. Rosewood London, half a mile away in Holborn, runs $936 with a slightly lower but still excellent guest rating, and it has a spa and sauna the Savoy's listing doesn't mention. Both sit at 5 stars with review counts in the same range, so this is a genuine style-versus-value call rather than a quality gap.

The look and the feel

The Savoy

The Savoy opened in 1889 and still carries that theatrical, gilded confidence: the forecourt is one of the few places in Britain where traffic drives on the right, a hangover from the days of horse-drawn carriages turning for the entrance. Rooms split between Edwardian florals and crisper Art Deco lines, with marble bathrooms and, in the better rooms, views over the Thames. The American Bar is the draw for many, all polished wood and cocktail ritual dating back over a century, and the Beaufort Bar does its Art Deco cabaret thing in gold and black. It's a hotel that knows its own myth and plays up to it, full of guests who came for exactly that.

Right for people who want the full theatrical London hotel experience, the Thames views, and a bar with its own history attached.

Rosewood London

Rosewood London occupies the old Pearl Assurance building on High Holborn, a solid Edwardian block turned into something warmer inside than its stone facade suggests. The designer rooms lean bespoke and contemporary rather than pastiche, with Italian marble bathrooms and a quieter, more residential feel than a grand West End address usually offers. The Mirror Room restaurant is the set-piece, panelled and softly lit for all-day dining, while the spa and sauna give it a wellness layer the Savoy doesn't advertise. Holborn itself is less theatrical than the Strand, more legal London and Bloomsbury fringe, which suits guests who want proximity to the centre without the crowds outside the door.

Right for people who want a quieter, design-led five-star stay with a spa, at a noticeably lower nightly rate.

Rosewood, the cheaper of the two, has no pool on its facilities list, whereas the Savoy does; everything else runs close, so the real gap is that pool plus the Savoy's river frontage and older pedigree.

The Savoy is the more beautiful place to simply stand in, because its Deco and Edwardian rooms were built for spectacle and still deliver it, where Rosewood's interiors, though handsome, were designed to be tasteful rather than to take your breath away.

Beautiful, stylish, civilized staff, quiet

10/10

“Excellent staff, service, I will definitely stay there and refer others.”

8/10

“I will definitely stay at the Savoy again.”

The view, the staff, the location, the facilities in general.

The amount of water supplied is too little. There is no variety in the snacks kept in the room. Some fruit and cookies will help.

“Fabulous hotel for our young family”

Beautiful hotel and very spacious family room. Staff went above and beyond with our young family and the extra touches for the children were excellent. Breakfast was also amazing in the hotel’s restaurant.
