The honest take

Book the Ritz if Piccadilly grandeur and a Michelin-starred dining room are the point of the trip; at $2,162 a night it costs roughly 3.5 times The Rookery's $607. Book The Rookery if you want a genuinely characterful five-star stay in Clerkenwell without the flagship price tag, and don't need a gym or on-site parking. Both rate exceptionally well with guests (9.5 vs 9.3 out of 10), so this is a question of taste and budget rather than quality.

The look and the feel

The Ritz London

The Ritz opened in 1906, all Louis XVI plasterwork, gilt mirrors and a Long Gallery that runs the length of the building like something out of Versailles reimagined for Piccadilly. The Rivoli Bar is proper Art Deco, gold leaf glowing under low light, the kind of room that makes a martini feel like an occasion. Bedrooms lean antique and ornate rather than minimalist, with high ceilings and the sort of hush that comes from a century of polishing. It draws a crowd who dress for dinner and don't blink at the tariff.

Guests who want the full Mayfair set piece: afternoon tea, a Michelin dining room, and a bar that looks like the 1920s never ended.

The Rookery

The Rookery is a row of 18th-century Georgian houses knitted together in Clerkenwell, all bare brick, oak panelling and a real fire in the sitting room. Rooms keep their original features, sash windows, worn beams, antique furniture that looks collected rather than bought in bulk, and there's a walled garden tucked behind the buildings that most guests don't expect. It's quieter, more residential in feel, and the neighbourhood outside is Clerkenwell's mix of design studios and old meat-market streets rather than Mayfair's shopfronts.

Guests who want a genuinely historic, atmospheric stay with five-star comfort but don't need the fanfare or the Piccadilly address.

The Rookery has no on-site fitness facility or parking, so anyone driving in or needing a gym has to look elsewhere; everything else about the stay, the antique rooms, the period character, the guest scores, holds up well against the Ritz.

The Ritz is the more theatrical, spend-a-fortune-and-feel-it room, but The Rookery's real 18th-century fabric and open fires make it the more honestly beautiful place to actually sit still in.

“Awful treatment and beware of their MINIMUM spend rules”

Been going here for over 30 years for drinks, food and parties and this time was awful. We were told to go to the Rivoli bar downstairs and sat down and ordered drinks after around 10 mins. I told them I was was in a hurry as we were leaving for a show and my daughter had her 21st so I brought her down for a drink before we headed off. After another 10 mins a guy came back and told us that we must spend £150.00 bet

“A wonderful experience”

We had afternoon tea and the experience was wonderful from start to finish. Despite the hotel undergoing renovation, you would never know, We were made to feel special from the start We were not able to be in the famous palm court but the area we were in was comfortable and luxurious The atmosphere was perfect made even more special by the pianist Ian playing a wonderful selection of music to enhance the quiet cal

“Secret Garden minimum spend needs reviewing!”

We were pleasantly surprised to discover the new secret garden was open, but even more surprised with the £75 per person minimum spend ! Despite spending over the minimum spend service was slow, no recognition was given for two birthdays being celebrated. Very disappointed as it’s a beautiful space with lovely live music and atmosphere the rest is just a let down …

“The perfect romantic stay in the centre of London!”

Stunning hotel, very clean and comfortable, service was impeccable, breakfast was delicious, and very convenient location. We booked for our wedding night and were very kindly upgraded too, which we really appreciate. Can’t recommend this place enough!
