Book The Guesthouse Vienna unless you specifically want the Ritz-Carlton's spa and pool. It's $184 cheaper a night, rated higher by guests (9.6 vs 9.2 over more reviews), and sits right by the Staatsoper rather than on the Ringstrasse. The Ritz-Carlton earns its price with wellness facilities the Guesthouse simply doesn't offer, but for design character and value, the smaller hotel wins.
The Ritz-Carlton occupies a converted 19th-century palais on the Ringstrasse, all high ceilings, marble and gilt detail dressed up in a fairly generic contemporary luxury idiom. The lobby has the hush of old money with the polish of a global chain; rooms lean on marble bathrooms and flat-screens rather than anything distinctly Viennese. The rooftop bar is the real draw, with views over the boulevard and the opera roofline, and the Susanne Kaufmann spa gives the whole place a wellness-resort dimension unusual in the city centre. It suits a guest who wants brand consistency and comprehensive facilities more than local texture.
Guests who want a full-service five-star with spa, pool and gym, and don't mind paying for it.
The Guesthouse Vienna occupies a quieter, more intimate scale near the State Opera, styled with a lighter, more design-forward hand: high-class furniture, Bang & Olufsen sound systems, and rooms that read more like a well-appointed private apartment than a hotel suite. There's a brasserie and bakery downstairs turning out fresh bread and pastries, and the in-room Austrian wine and beer is a nice, unfussy touch that signals hospitality over spectacle. It feels like a smaller, more personal operation, and the street outside puts you steps from the opera and the inner city's best walking.
Guests who want a design-led, personal stay with location and atmosphere over wellness facilities.
The Guesthouse Vienna has no spa, pool, fitness room or golf access, all of which the Ritz-Carlton offers, so anyone wanting a wellness stay loses out at the cheaper property.
The Guesthouse Vienna is the more characterful place to actually stay, with its intimate scale and considered furnishings beating the Ritz-Carlton's competent but somewhat impersonal luxury-chain polish.

Nothing on our list that The Ritz-Carlton lacks.
“Late night pool. Comfortable beds”
“For sure the best in-room coffee I've ever had.”
Guesthouse Vienna guests come away happier overall, praising the location, free wine and friendly staff, while Ritz-Carlton reviews are mostly short but one flags slow breakfast service and poor cleaning.
“Excellant stay”
Everything
Late night pool. Comfortable beds
Very slow service at breakfast. Room cleaning not great.
“Nearly perfect - just one bad point”
The room was small but creatively laid out and well-furnished. The whimsical layout cheered us instantly. We loved that they supplied us with many free amenities - especially the wine that we could enjoy in the room or at dinner. There was even a coffee maker that ground actual coffee beans as needed. For sure the best in-room coffee I've ever had. Great location as well.
The only negative was a front desk person with a curt and dismissive attitude. Actually rude.
This is the second time we stayed in the Guesthouse. Still impressed by its location, well equipped room, friendly staffs, and wines in the room. We had a very pleasant experience during our stay. Highly recommend!

Wonderful central location! Only steps away from the state opera house and Albertina. Very clean and modern facility. We loved the free mini bar!
