The honest take

At $3,177 versus $3,399, the Peninsula Paris is the better buy, with a rooftop the Plaza Athénée doesn't have and a higher guest rating from a smaller but very satisfied pool of reviewers. The Plaza Athénée counters with pet allowance and its own bar plus a five-restaurant spread and that famous red-geranium courtyard on Avenue Montaigne. Both sit within a kilometre of each other in Paris's smartest quarter, so the choice comes down to what you want the building to do to you, not where it is. For pure architectural theatre, the Plaza Athénée still has the edge; for calm modern luxury with a view, book the Peninsula.

The look and the feel

The Peninsula Paris

The Peninsula occupies a restored Belle Époque palace on Avenue Kléber that was once the Majestic hotel, gutted and rebuilt by Henry Leung's Peninsula group with Parisian architect Richard Martinet and designer Chhada Siembieda. The result reads as haussmannien on the outside and quietly contemporary within: pale stone, brass detailing, a lobby with restrained Art Deco lines rather than gilt overload. The rooftop bar and L'Oiseau Blanc restaurant, tucked under a glass dome with views over the Eiffel Tower, are the emotional centre of the building, a modern addition grafted onto a nineteenth-century shell. It draws a crowd that wants five-star comfort without the theatre of old-school Parisian grandeur.

Travellers who want modern five-star polish, a rooftop view, and a slightly lower price for a comparable level of luxury.

Hôtel Plaza Athénée

The Plaza Athénée is the more theatrical of the two, its awnings a strip of red geraniums running the length of Avenue Montaigne since the 1930s, a signature as recognisable as the Eiffel Tower itself. Inside, the lobby is all mirrored panels, grey and silver tones, and a long bar with a glowing onyx counter designed by Patrick Jouin, a room that has hosted couture houses and film stars for decades. The five restaurants include Alain Ducasse's dining room, and rooms keep marble bathrooms and personalised minibars as a nod to old grand-hotel service. It is the address fashion people choose, precisely because it has never stopped being one.

Guests who want the full grand-hotel spectacle on Avenue Montaigne, room for a pet, and Ducasse-level dining under one roof.

Choosing the cheaper Peninsula means giving up the Plaza Athénée's pet allowance and its own dedicated bar, along with the wider spread of five in-house restaurants.

The Plaza Athénée is the more beautiful room to sit in, thanks to Jouin's onyx bar and eight decades of fashion-world glamour that the Peninsula's polished newness hasn't yet earned.

6/10

Overall the stay was very pleasant until after the check out, I found out that lost my jacket at the hotel room, so I called them. It took them a couple of days to search for it and told me no. It was at the changing room.. but I was told they did not find it.

“The perfect hotel.”

Everything was faultless. The perfect hotel. Food, location, staff, rooms were all outstanding.

“Constrangedora”

Localização e a cama.
