Book Rosewood London unless you specifically want the pool and Hyde Park address. It's $308 a night cheaper, has a near-perfect guest rating from over six times as many reviewers, and lacks nothing on the Lanesborough's list except that pool. The Lanesborough justifies its price with a Belgravia address, a butler, and the Lanesborough Club & Spa, but Rosewood is the more interesting building to actually walk into.
The Lanesborough occupies the old St George's Hospital, a Regency building by William Wilkins, and the Regency theme runs through everything inside: silk-lined suites, marble fireplaces, gilt mirrors, deep-buttoned chairs, a colour palette of eau-de-nil and ivory. The Library Bar has dark panelling and a serious cognac list; the Grill does white tablecloths and formal service. It faces Hyde Park Corner directly, so the traffic roundabout is right outside, but guest rooms look onto the park itself. It draws an older, moneyed crowd who want butler service and don't mind the theatre of it.
Traditionalists who want Hyde Park views, a butler, and a full spa-and-pool experience and are prepared to pay well over the odds for it.
Rosewood London is set in the former Pearl Assurance headquarters, a 1914 Edwardian Baroque building with a huge central courtyard entrance that still feels institutional in scale but has been softened with contemporary British design: bespoke furniture, Italian marble bathrooms, dark wood and brass fittings that read more modern than the Lanesborough's Regency pastiche. The Mirror Room restaurant, all reflective surfaces and jewel tones, is the standout public space, and the courtyard itself gives a sense of arrival that Holborn's ordinary streets don't otherwise suggest. It sits among law firms and the British Museum rather than embassies and Knightsbridge shopping, and pulls a slightly younger, design-conscious crowd.
Anyone who wants five-star design and service near the British Museum and Covent Garden for considerably less money.
Rosewood, being the cheaper of the two, has no pool, which the Lanesborough offers as part of its spa; everything else on the lists matches.
Rosewood London's Edwardian courtyard and Mirror Room make it the more striking building to stand inside, even though the Lanesborough's Regency interiors are the more expensive fantasy.

Nothing on our list that The Lanesborough lacks.
“Went for a pre-booked prearranged drink in the (with)drawing room.”
“Staff went above and beyond with our young family and the extra touches for the children were excellent.”
Both sets of guests leave very happy, but Rosewood's reviews highlight extra warmth towards families with children, while The Lanesborough's centre on attentive, personal service for couples.
