The honest take

Both are five-star Hong Kong stalwarts a couple of kilometres apart, and both are within about fifty dollars of each other, but the St. Regis edges out on guest rating (9.8 vs 9.4) with a far larger review base, while the Landmark Mandarin sits at the more expensive end at 762 versus 713. If it's the fabled interiors and Amber you want, book the Landmark; if you want harbour views, an outdoor pool and Wan Chai's waterfront energy, take the St. Regis. Neither listing shows the other lacking anything specific, so this comes down to neighbourhood and taste in rooms, not amenities.

The look and the feel

The Landmark Mandarin Oriental

The Landmark Mandarin occupies part of the Landmark shopping complex in Central, and its interiors, done by André Fu, are one of the defining Hong Kong hotel design jobs of the 2000s: dark timber, low lighting, oversized deep-soak tubs set almost sculpturally in the rooms, a kind of moody minimalism that reads as more residential loft than typical five-star gilt. The spa with its hot tub and sauna continues that hushed, textured feel, and Amber downstairs does serious French cooking under a canopy of hanging bronze rods. It's a hotel for people who want design pedigree and to be five minutes from Lan Kwai Fong and Soho without staying in the middle of the noise.

Design-minded travellers who want to be in the thick of Central and Soho and don't mind paying a premium for it.

The St. Regis Hong Kong

The St. Regis sits over on the Wan Chai harbourfront, a newer build with the brand's usual formula of butler service, chandeliers and a more traditionally opulent, gold-and-marble language than the Landmark's pared-back look. It has an outdoor pool and fitness centre, which matters in a city where hotel pools are rare and prized, plus 24-hour room service and private parking. The crowd here skews toward business travellers and those wanting harbour views and the more classic grand-hotel experience rather than boutique design.

Travellers who want a harbourside outdoor pool, parking and a more classic grand-hotel service style, and who've read the room on 485 mostly glowing reviews.

Neither facility list shows outright gaps, so the real trade-off is address and atmosphere: the St. Regis is cheaper and better-reviewed but sits away from Central's nightlife, while the Landmark costs more for its Soho-adjacent location and design cachet rather than for anything extra on the amenity sheet.

The Landmark Mandarin is the more beautiful place to actually sit in, because André Fu's interiors have a materiality and restraint that most five-star Hong Kong hotels, including the St. Regis, don't attempt.

“Wonderful Afternoon Tea at The St. Regis Hong Kong”

My wife and I thoroughly enjoyed the Signature Afternoon Tea at The Drawing Room. The elegant setting and unique dim sum-style trolley, where we could choose our own savouries and sweets, made it special. Everything was beautifully presented and delicious, especially the light scones. Special thanks to Dexter for his excellent service — attentive, friendly, and thoughtful throughout.
