The honest take

Book the Conrad if you want a reliable five-star base with harbour views at roughly half the price, backed by over a thousand reviews. Book the Landmark Mandarin Oriental if design and atmosphere matter more than the bill and you want to be within a short walk of Lan Kwai Fong and Soho. Both sit in the same 0.9km stretch of Hong Kong Island, but they're really different addresses in feel: Queens Road Central versus Pacific Place in Admiralty. At $762 versus $411, the Landmark costs almost double, and its 50 reviews at 9.4 suggest a smaller, more curated guest experience than the Conrad's 1,079 at 8.4.

The look and the feel

The Landmark Mandarin Oriental

The Landmark Mandarin Oriental occupies part of the Landmark shopping complex, and its interiors were done by André Fu, whose signature is here in full: warm timber, brass detailing, low lighting, a restraint that reads as calm rather than cold. The 111 rooms are large by Hong Kong standards, with deep soaking tubs and a sense of privacy that comes from scale rather than spectacle. MO Bar and Amber (Richard Ekkebus's French kitchen) draw a design and finance crowd who want quiet rooms with good acoustics rather than a view. The spa, with its hot tub and sauna, is one of the better hotel spas in the territory, dim and marble-lined, a retreat from the noise of Queens Road outside.

Design-minded travellers and couples who want quiet, well-made rooms and don't mind paying for it.

Conrad Hong Kong

The Conrad sits atop Pacific Place, a glass tower with big windows engineered for the harbour and Peak views that are the point of staying here. The lobby and public rooms are conventional five-star international style — marble floors, chandeliers, a scale built for conferences and large groups rather than intimacy. Nicholini's does Italian, Golden Leaf does Cantonese, and the Garden Cafe buffet pulls a broad crowd of business travellers and families. It's a hotel that works reliably rather than one that tries to move you; the views do the emotional work the interiors don't.

Business travellers and families who want harbour views, buffet variety, and five-star reliability at a lower price.

At $411 the Conrad gives up the hot tub the Landmark has, and more broadly trades André Fu's intimacy for a bigger, more corporate footprint.

The Landmark Mandarin Oriental is the more beautiful place to actually sit in, because André Fu's rooms and MO Bar were designed to hold your attention rather than just frame a view.
