The honest take

Royal Mansour Marrakech is the finer place by a wide margin and the guest ratings back it up, 9.8 against 8.3 from far fewer but far more satisfied reviewers. At $2,866 a night it is priced like the private riad city it actually is, versus $488 for the Sofitel's large-scale resort comfort in Hivernage. The Sofitel does hold one thing on its list that the Royal Mansour doesn't, a hot tub, but otherwise the gap is entirely about scale, privacy and craft. Book the Royal Mansour if the point of the trip is the hotel itself; book the Sofitel if the point is Marrakech and you want a reliable, well-run base for it.

The look and the feel

Royal Mansour Marrakech

The Royal Mansour is a walled village of private riads built for King Mohammed VI's own hospitality ambitions, each riad its own three-storey house with a rooftop terrace, a plunge pool, and a private courtyard hidden behind a carved cedar door. Zellige tilework, tadelakt plaster walls polished to a soft sheen, brass lanterns, and hand-carved plasterwork cover every surface, all made by Moroccan artisans brought in specifically for the build. The central gardens are landscaped with orange trees and fountains, and staff move through underground tunnels so guests never see them arrive. It draws heads of state, honeymooners with no budget ceiling, and people who want total privacy inside a city that rarely offers it.

Travellers who want total seclusion, serious craft, and are not counting the cost.

Sofitel Marrakech Palais Impérial & Spa

The Sofitel Marrakech sits in Hivernage, a modern quarter of wide avenues and palm trees a short walk from the old medina and Jamaâ El Fna square. It reads as a big contemporary resort hotel, three swimming pools, a spa with hammam and hot tub, an orangery restaurant with Atlas Mountain views, rather than an intimate riad experience. The scale and the review count, over 2,300 guests, point to a hotel built for volume: groups, families, and travellers who want polish and reliable service without an eye-watering bill.

Travellers who want a comfortable, well-equipped base near the medina at a fraction of the price.

The Sofitel is missing nothing major on the facility list beyond the Royal Mansour's edge in privacy and scale, its rooms are hotel rooms rather than private walled houses with their own pools, and its public spaces serve hundreds of guests a night rather than a handful.

The Royal Mansour is the more beautiful and characterful place to be, a walled artisan-built village rather than a hotel, and there is nothing else in the city built to that standard of private craft.

“Perhaps the best hotel in the world”

This may just be the best hotel in the world. The room space and design is truly unparalleled. Every restaurant is life changing and the relaxed bar is the perfect place to unwind. The spa is lovely too and getting lost in the gardens is simply a treat at every corner.

“An Unforgettable Riad Experience”

Delivers an experience that feels completely unique. Staying in a private riad offered an incredible sense of privacy, with exquisite Moroccan craftsmanship at every turn and service that was warm, intuitive, and flawlessly executed. The dining was a highlight throughout my stay. Breakfast featured an exceptional selection of Moroccan specialties alongside fresh pastries, seasonal fruit, made-to-order egg dishes, an

“This is what perfection in hospital looks like”

The Royal Mansour is one of a kind. I’ve been to Marrakech before and thus didn’t leave the hotel for two days in order to fully enjoy the individual Riad which sets a standard beyond luxury.

There’s nothing not to dislike other than that you eventually have to leave this paradise

See you next ti
