The honest take

Book the Prince de Galles at $1,407 unless you specifically want a pool and hot tub, in which case the Royal Monceau at $1,552 earns its premium. Both sit near the Champs-Élysées, eight hundred metres apart, with near-identical guest scores (9.2 vs 9.4) on similar review counts. The Royal Monceau's extra $145 a night buys wellness facilities the Prince de Galles simply doesn't have on site.

The look and the feel

Prince de Galles

The Prince de Galles is Art Deco Paris done properly: geometric mosaic floors, gilt mirrors, a glassed-in courtyard that fills with quiet at 4pm tea service. It sits on Avenue George V in the grand-hotel belt near the Champs-Élysées, the kind of address where the lobby smells like lilies and old money. Rooms lean classic French luxury, toile and silk rather than experiment, with skyline glimpses from the upper floors. It draws an older, moneyed clientele who want Paris to look like Paris.

Traditionalists who want gilt-and-marble Parisian grandeur without the design flourishes, and don't need a pool.

Hôtel Le Royal Monceau Raffles Paris

The Royal Monceau is Philippe Starck's Paris, and it shows in every corridor: black and white checkerboard floors, leopard print against raw concrete, a library stacked with art books instead of a conventional lobby. Starck's 2010 renovation turned a 1928 hotel into something theatrical and slightly subversive, all velvet and neon-lit mirrors, with Matsuhisa's sushi bar and a Michelin Italian room pulling a design-literate, moneyed younger crowd. The 23-metre pool and spa are part of that theatre, lit like something from a film set.

Design-conscious travellers who want Starck's playful maximalism and plan to actually use a proper spa and pool.

At the Prince de Galles you give up the pool, hot tub and the wellness circuit that the Royal Monceau built its reputation on.

The Royal Monceau is the more interesting room to stand in, because Starck built a hotel that argues with itself instead of just performing good taste.

“Upscale hotel with excellent customer service”

4 night stay in August. Excellent customer service, including at reception, concierge, and bellhop. We don't usually use concierge at hotels but they were extremely helpful in quickly arranging tickets for us to sold out tourist attractions. Small room but comfortable bed and clean bed. Only downside was not having my Marriot nightly upgrade award honored, even though the Marriott app showed availability in highe

“I guess it’s our first and last time there!”

I guess we are used to different kind of service in Paris. The location is good, the hotel offers reasonable rooms but overall service needs huge improvement. The concierge needs proper staffing, the reception needs proper staffing, the only place that has good staffing is the restaurant. The hotel as is the case with many hotels in Paris is quite old but the rooms relatively ok apart from the bathroom in the suite

Fantastic experience! The Caesar salad was delicious, and the desserts were amazing. A huge shoutout to our server, Jesus, who was super friendly and patiently walked us through all the dessert choices. We’ll definitely be back!
