The honest take
Book the Mandarin Oriental if budget allows: at $1,891 it has the higher guest rating (10/263 reviews), Michelin-starred dining at Seta, and pet-friendliness the Principe lacks. The Principe di Savoia is a legitimate alternative at $910, roughly half the price, with its own spa and pool, 1.2km away near Piazza della Repubblica. Both are five-star and well reviewed; the gap is largely about scale, address, and the Mandarin's fashion-district pedigree.
The look and the feel
Mandarin Oriental
The Mandarin Oriental Milan sits in four connected sixteenth-century buildings on Via Andegari, in the Quadrilatero della Moda, and it wears that history quietly rather than loudly. Antonio Citterio's interiors keep to a restrained Milanese modernism: stone floors, low walnut furniture, muted greys and creams, nothing shouting for attention. The courtyard garden and its bar are the heart of the place in summer, a genuinely calm pocket behind a busy fashion street. Seta, the two-Michelin-star restaurant, and the marble bathrooms signal the level of finish throughout.
Design-conscious travellers who want quiet Milanese luxury tucked into the fashion district's back streets.
Hotel Principe Di Savoia
The Principe di Savoia is the grander, older-school Milanese gesture, a 1927 palace on Piazza della Repubblica with a lobby of chandeliers, gilt, and the kind of scale associated with old European grand hotels. It has long been the address for a certain international clientele who want marble columns and a doorman rather than minimalism. The listing points to a full spa, indoor pool, and Acanto restaurant with its bar/lounge, plus airport shuttles and a business centre, all pointing to a hotel built for both leisure grandeur and business traffic passing through the piazza above.
Guests who want old-world grand-hotel theatre, a central piazza address, and lower spend without giving up a spa or pool.
Nothing is missing from the facility list itself; the Principe di Savoia gives up the Mandarin's pet-friendly policy, its Michelin-starred kitchen, and its higher guest rating and review volume, along with the quieter fashion-district setting versus the busier piazza.
The Mandarin Oriental is the more beautiful place to actually sit in, because Citterio's restraint and that hidden courtyard garden feel considered room by room, where the Principe's grandeur, however handsome, is more about scale than intimacy.

“Excellent hotel with very friendly staff and Excellent food , I had the best Osso buko ever”
Hotel Principe Di Savoia's guests come away happier, describing consistently attentive staff, standout food and an elegant atmosphere across many detailed reviews, whereas Mandarin Oriental's feedback is thinner and includes a minor complaint about room size.

“Excellent experience probably best hotel in Milan ”
Excellent hotel with very friendly staff and Excellent food , I had the best Osso buko ever, despite it was in room service which is not usually as good as the food in the restaurant...but this was exquisite....

“Luxurious retreat in Milano”
Brought my elder parents to this hotel and it was pure luxury! It’s an odd thing to say but the Principe di Savoia is the best smelling hotel I’ve ever been to. It’s like they pump out a signature scent on each floor. Also the pool and the spa were a welcome break from sightseeing.

“Best hotel in Milano!”
Our stay here at the hotel has been nothing short of phenomenal. The hotel was perfectly located for us to be able to walk to restaurants and to the train station for day trips to Torino and Como.
The hotel itself is incredible. The rooms are amazing, as is the bar and restaurant where we had a brilliant breakfast every morning. The cocktails in the bar were first class and perfect for a pre-dinner drink.
