The honest take

Book the Mandarin Oriental Hyde Park if a swimming pool and Heston Blumenthal's Dinner matter to your stay; it costs $1,251 against Rosewood's $904 and is the only one of the two with a pool. Book Rosewood London if you want the more theatrical building for less money: $904 a night, a 9.2 guest rating from 2,285 reviews versus 9.4 from 491, and no facility gap against it except that pool. They sit 3.4km apart in different parts of town, Knightsbridge against Holborn, which changes the whole character of an evening out.

The look and the feel

Mandarin Oriental Hyde Park

This is the old Hyde Park Hotel, an Edwardian pile facing the park, redone by Mandarin Oriental with the brand's usual polish: pale marble, orchids, discreet Asian accents folded into an English shell. Rooms are individually decorated rather than uniform, many with park views, bathrooms in heavy marble. The public rooms are hushed and formal in the way Knightsbridge hotels tend to be, cut through with the theatre of Dinner by Heston Blumenthal downstairs and the more playful Japanese energy of The Aubrey. It draws a moneyed, dressed, often international crowd who came for the address as much as the hotel.

Guests who want a swimming pool, spa treatments, and a Michelin-starred dinner without leaving the building, plus a Knightsbridge address by the park.

Rosewood London

Rosewood London occupies Pearl Assurance House, a vast Edwardian Beaux-Arts building from 1914, and the conversion keeps that scale: a courtyard entrance, a soaring lobby, dark wood and brass detailing that reads more London gentleman's club than boutique hotel. Bedrooms carry bespoke furnishings and Italian marble bathrooms, and the Mirror Room restaurant is genuinely striking, all reflective surfaces and jewel tones against the period bones. Holborn itself is workaday by day and quiet by night, closer to legal London and the British Museum than to Knightsbridge glamour, which suits guests who want grandeur without the see-and-be-seen crowd.

Guests who want architectural drama and a lower rate, and don't mind a sauna instead of a pool, in a quieter part of central London.

Rosewood, for roughly $350 less a night, gives up the 17-metre pool that Mandarin Oriental has; everything else in the facility lists is even.

Rosewood London is the more arresting building to walk into, its 1914 Beaux-Arts scale and courtyard doing more architecturally than the Mandarin Oriental's tasteful but more conventional Edwardian-luxury refit.

“Fabulous hotel for our young family”

Beautiful hotel and very spacious family room. Staff went above and beyond with our young family and the extra touches for the children were excellent. Breakfast was also amazing in the hotel’s restaurant.
