La Mamounia
La Mamounia is the hotel Churchill painted from, an Art Deco palace built in the 1920s and reworked over the decades, most recently with interiors overseen by Jacques Garcia, all deep reds, carved cedar screens, zellige tilework and brass lanterns that throw honeycomb shadows across the lobby floor. The gardens are genuinely old, giant palms and olive trees planted long before the hotel existed, and the pools sit among them like something from a 1930s postcard rather than a modern resort. Public rooms are dim, plush, and hushed in the way old grand hotels are, all velvet banquettes and mint tea served on brass trays. It draws an older, moneyed, often European crowd who came for exactly this atmosphere and the medina on the doorstep.
Mamounia suits travellers who want to be inside Marrakech's history, walking distance from the souks and Jemaa el-Fnaa, and are happy to pay for that address and the name.
Fairmont Royal Palm Marrakech
The Fairmont Royal Palm sits well outside the city on its own domaine, built around a golf course and mountain views rather than old city walls, so the feel is resort rather than palace.
