The honest take
Book the Excelsior Hotel Gallia. It costs $301 less a night, carries a 9.2 guest rating across over a thousand reviews against the Principe's unrated 151, and its facility list includes a rooftop, hot tub and pet allowance that the Principe simply doesn't offer. The Principe di Savoia has no listed advantage over the Gallia on paper, only its own considerable history and address. Both sit five minutes apart near Piazza della Repubblica and Milano Centrale, so location isn't the deciding factor here.
The look and the feel
Hotel Principe Di Savoia
The Principe di Savoia opened in 1927 by Piazza della Repubblica and has long been Milan's grand dame, all marble staircases, gilt mirrors and a lobby that still moves at the pace of old money. Renzo Mongiardino's touch is felt in the layered, theatrical interiors of its suites, heavy silk, dark wood, chandeliers that feel inherited rather than installed. The Acanto restaurant and its bar carry that same old-world formality, hushed and a little stiff, popular with businessmen and guests who want Milan to feel unchanged since the last century.
Traditionalists who want old Milanese grandeur, dark wood and inherited formality over a rooftop view.
Excelsior Hotel Gallia
The Excelsior Gallia, by Milano Centrale station, is a 1932 rationalist landmark reworked with a sleek, contemporary hand, floor-to-ceiling windows, Italian design furniture, Trussardi toiletries in the bathrooms. The rooftop restaurant and terrace give it a skyline the Principe can't match, and the 1000-square-metre Shiseido spa leans modern wellness over old-world formality. It draws a design-conscious, slightly younger crowd, people who want Milan's fashion-week energy rather than its aristocratic hush.
Design-minded travellers who want a rooftop, a serious spa, and a more contemporary Milan.
The Principe gives up the rooftop restaurant, the hot tub and the pet-friendly policy that the Gallia lists, and asks $301 more a night for the privilege of its pedigree.
The Gallia is the more striking place to actually be in right now, its rationalist bones and rooftop views feel alive, while the Principe's grandeur, though real, can feel like a museum you're paying to sleep in.

“Luxurious retreat in Milano”
Brought my elder parents to this hotel and it was pure luxury! It’s an odd thing to say but the Principe di Savoia is the best smelling hotel I’ve ever been to. It’s like they pump out a signature scent on each floor. Also the pool and the spa were a welcome break from sightseeing.

“Best hotel in Milano!”
Our stay here at the hotel has been nothing short of phenomenal. The hotel was perfectly located for us to be able to walk to restaurants and to the train station for day trips to Torino and Como.
The hotel itself is incredible. The rooms are amazing, as is the bar and restaurant where we had a brilliant breakfast every morning. The cocktails in the bar were first class and perfect for a pre-dinner drink.
