The honest take

Book the Plaza Athénée if you want the full red-awning, Eiffel Tower spectacle and don't mind paying for it at $3,399 a night. Book the Prince de Galles if you want nearly the same address and standard of service for $372 less, with a quieter, more clubbable Art Deco atmosphere. Both sit on the same 400-metre stretch between Avenue Montaigne and Avenue George V, so the location argument is a wash. The gap between them is really about scale and theatre, not quality.

The look and the feel

Hôtel Plaza Athénée

The Plaza Athénée is the Paris hotel that photographs as Paris itself: the red geraniums under the awnings on Avenue Montaigne, the grey zinc roofline, the Cour Jardin lit up at night with its ivy-covered walls. Inside, Patrick Jouin's redesign layered mid-century French glamour over the belle époque bones, with a lot of grey, silver leaf and mirrored surfaces in the lobby, and the famous Bar du Plaza with its cobalt-blue bottle-lined counter. Rooms run to marble bathrooms and personalised minibars, and the top suites look straight down the avenue at the Eiffel Tower. It draws a crowd that wants to be seen doing so, couture houses and fashion week regulars included.

Right for guests who want the landmark, the view of the Eiffel Tower, and the sense of staying inside a piece of Paris iconography.

Prince de Galles

The Prince de Galles is Art Deco through and through, built in 1928, with a mosaic-tiled courtyard, geometric ironwork and a warmer, more residential feel than its grander neighbours. The restoration leaned into original details: terrazzo floors, bronze fittings, a jewel-box bar with a curved marble counter that feels more like a private members' room than a hotel lounge. It's a five-minute walk from the Champs-Élysées but the atmosphere inside is hushed rather than showy, the kind of place regulars return to because the staff remember them.

Right for guests who want equivalent five-star comfort and a genuine Art Deco interior without the premium or the crowd of a marquee address.

Neither listing shows the other holding an amenity it lacks; the difference is the Plaza Athénée's five restaurants against the Prince de Galles' single Norbert Tarayre restaurant, and the extra scale and name recognition that comes with the higher rate.

The Plaza Athénée is the more spectacular room to walk into, but the Prince de Galles is the more beautiful one to sit still in, its Art Deco detailing has more craft and less spectacle.

“The perfect hotel.”

Everything was faultless. The perfect hotel. Food, location, staff, rooms were all outstanding.

7/10

“Constrangedora”

Localização e a cama.

“Upscale hotel with excellent customer service”

4 night stay in August. Excellent customer service, including at reception, concierge, and bellhop. We don't usually use concierge at hotels but they were extremely helpful in quickly arranging tickets for us to sold out tourist attractions. Small room but comfortable bed and clean bed. Only downside was not having my Marriot nightly upgrade award honored, even though the Marriott app showed availability in highe

6/10

“I guess it’s our first and last time there!”

I guess we are used to different kind of service in Paris. The location is good, the hotel offers reasonable rooms but overall service needs huge improvement. The concierge needs proper staffing, the reception needs proper staffing, the only place that has good staffing is the restaurant. The hotel as is the case with many hotels in Paris is quite old but the rooms relatively ok apart from the bathroom in the suite

“Top notch”

Fabulous hotel! Will not be disappointed.
