The honest take

Book the Rosewood unless the Mayfair address and rooftop spa matter to you specifically. At $904 against $1285, Rosewood offers a higher review count (2,285 against 344) and a guest rating of 9.2, against the Four Seasons' 10 from a much smaller sample. The Four Seasons' only listed edge is a hot tub; everything else is a wash on paper, so the decision is really about neighbourhood and taste in buildings.

The look and the feel

Four Seasons Hotel London at Park Lane

The Four Seasons at Park Lane occupies a 1970s tower at Hamilton Place, refitted since into the kind of glossy, low-lit Mayfair box that trades brutalist bones for a soft, expensive skin: dark stone, brass fittings, deep carpet, a lobby that hums quietly rather than announces itself. Pavyllon by Yannick Alléno gives the ground floor a French, theatrical energy, all open kitchen and choreography, while Bar Antoine leans clubby and dim. The rooftop spa is the real event, a top-floor sanctuary with Hyde Park spread out below it, glass and stone and hot water instead of history. It draws a moneyed, discreet crowd who want Mayfair's postcode and don't need the building to be beautiful, just quiet and correct.

Right for guests who want the Mayfair postcode, a rooftop spa with Hyde Park views, and the specific theatre of a Michelin-adjacent French restaurant downstairs.

Rosewood London

Rosewood London is housed in the old Pearl Assurance headquarters on High Holborn, a 1914 Edwardian Baroque block with a genuine grand hall of a courtyard entrance, and the interiors were redone with real conviction: bespoke furnishings, Italian marble bathrooms, a sense of scale in the public rooms that a purpose-built hotel rarely gets. The Mirror Room plays up the drama with reflective surfaces and jewel tones, while the Holborn dining room is calmer, better for breakfast than performance. Holborn itself is more workaday than Mayfair after dark, closer to legal London and the edge of the City than to Bond Street shopping, but the building has more presence than almost anything on Park Lane.

Right for guests who want a genuinely grand Edwardian building, better value, and don't mind trading Mayfair glamour for Holborn's quieter, more workaday streets.

Rosewood gives up the hot tub the Four Seasons lists, and with it a rooftop wellness experience built around Hyde Park views; otherwise the facility lists are level.

Rosewood is the more beautiful building to stand inside, an actual piece of Edwardian civic architecture turned hotel, against a competently glamorous but essentially anonymous 1970s tower.

“Fabulous hotel for our young family”

Beautiful hotel and very spacious family room. Staff went above and beyond with our young family and the extra touches for the children were excellent. Breakfast was also amazing in the hotel’s restaurant.
