The honest take

Both sit in Central/Wan Chai, two kilometres apart on the same harbourfront, both rated 9.8. The Four Seasons at $930 has the address's two Michelin-starred restaurants, Lung King Heen and Caprice, plus a hot tub the St. Regis doesn't list. The St. Regis at $713 gives up little on paper besides that hot tub, so if you don't need Cantonese and French cooking of that calibre in-house, it's the better value. If dining is part of the trip, pay the difference for the Four Seasons.

The look and the feel

Four Seasons Hotel Hong Kong

The Four Seasons sits at 8 Finance Street in the IFC complex, all glass and harbour light, rooms with floor-to-ceiling windows angled at Victoria Peak and the Kowloon skyline. The interiors mix Western and Chinese decor rather than committing hard to either, which reads as calm rather than themed. Lung King Heen was the first Chinese restaurant anywhere to get three Michelin stars, and the dining rooms carry that weight quietly, lacquer and jade tones, waiters who know the harbour view is not the only reason you're there. It draws a business and connoisseur crowd who came for Caprice's wine list as much as the bed.

Guests who want two Michelin-starred kitchens under the same roof as the harbour view.

The St. Regis Hong Kong

The St. Regis sits at 1 Harbour Drive in Wan Chai, newer to the skyline, with an outdoor pool that's rare for a hotel this central. Rooms are described as elegant with modern fit-outs, coffee machine, flat-screen, the standard high-end kit rather than anything eccentric. The listing leans on convenience and comfort, 24-hour room service, concierge, private parking, over any singular design statement, and reads as a hotel built to be reliably excellent rather than to make an argument about itself.

Guests who want a proper outdoor pool and five-star comfort without paying for the tasting menus.

The St. Regis, at $217 less a night, has no hot tub where the Four Seasons does, and nothing on its own list to compensate beyond the pool it already offers.

The Four Seasons has the more distinguished interior on record, mainly because Lung King Heen and Caprice give it a reason to be a destination beyond the room itself.

“Wonderful Afternoon Tea at The St. Regis Hong Kong”

My wife and I thoroughly enjoyed the Signature Afternoon Tea at The Drawing Room. The elegant setting and unique dim sum-style trolley, where we could choose our own savouries and sweets, made it special. Everything was beautifully presented and delicious, especially the light scones. Special thanks to Dexter for his excellent service — attentive, friendly, and thoughtful throughout. He made our afternoon even more e
