The honest take

Book Island Shangri-La unless the harbour view and the two Michelin-starred restaurants at Four Seasons are non-negotiable. At $489 against $930 for a night that's nearly half price, with a higher review count and only a fractionally lower guest rating. The Four Seasons' edge is a hot tub and its Central waterfront address; everything else about Shangri-La's offer, from the Tristan Auer rooms to the Admiralty connectivity, more than earns its keep.

The look and the feel

Four Seasons Hotel Hong Kong

The Four Seasons sits on reclaimed land at Finance Street in Central, its rooms built around floor-to-ceiling glass so Victoria Harbour, the Peak and Kowloon become the wallpaper. The decor mixes Western restraint with Chinese motifs in a way that reads more corporate-luxe than characterful, but the drama is outsourced to the view rather than the walls. Lung King Heen, the first Cantonese restaurant to win three Michelin stars, sits within the building alongside Caprice's French dining room, giving the hotel a genuine culinary gravity beyond its guest rooms. Argo Bar for breakfast and Caprice for cheese and wine bookend the day for a guest who wants ceremony built into the schedule.

Guests who want the Central harbour view from bed and a hotel built around two serious Michelin-starred restaurants.

Island Shangri-La

Island Shangri-La stands on Supreme Court Road above Pacific Place, plugged directly into the Admiralty MTR and one of Hong Kong's better shopping malls, which makes it a hotel for people who want to step from lift to street without friction. The guestrooms were reworked by Tristan Auer, whose hand brings a calmer, more tailored Asian-modern palette than the standard five-star template, with day beds and bespoke in-room pantries that suggest longer stays or guests who like to nest. The Horizon Club lounge adds a layer of quiet exclusivity for those who book into it. It is a hotel built for ease and comfort rather than spectacle, its personality found more in the room design than in the lobby theatre.

Guests who want a design-led room, direct MTR and mall access, and better value without giving up five-star polish.

At $489, Island Shangri-La gives up the Four Seasons' hot tub; on the facility lists provided, that is the only concrete thing missing, so the rest of the difference comes down to address, view and the pull of two Michelin-starred kitchens.

Four Seasons has the better view and the stronger restaurants, but Tristan Auer's rooms at Island Shangri-La are the more considered piece of design, so for the room itself it's the more beautiful place to be.

“Overall it was a pleasant experience. Rooms were a nice size and clean, beds were comfortable. Location of the hotel was”

Clean, great location right in pacific place which is a very short walk to admiralty MTR station , very helpful staff

The location of the lobby is a tad inconvenient when coming from the MTR - have to take lifts within pacific place mall up to level 5 then take another escalator/lift up to level 6 where the lobby is. Also the bathroom was slightly old, bath tub and shower curtain kind instead of an isolated shower cubicle so water goe

A really nice hotel with everything you need. Like the location in Central and easy to get about. The staff were really helpful and a string quartet in the lobby was a classy touch!
