The honest take

Book the Peninsula unless money is no object. It's $1,263 a night cheaper, rated nearly as high by guests, and has the one thing the George V doesn't: a rooftop bar with an Eiffel Tower view. The George V wins on sheer palace theatre and Le Cinq, but at this price gap the Peninsula's L'Oiseau Blanc rooftop restaurant covers similar ground for less. Both sit within half a mile of the Champs-Élysées, so location isn't the deciding factor.

The look and the feel

Four Seasons Hotel George V

The George V occupies a 1928 building reworked in the 1990s by Pierre-Yves Rochon, who filled it with 17th and 18th century antiques, tapestries, and the kind of flower arrangements the hotel is genuinely famous for, huge sculptural displays by Jeff Leatham that fill the lobby with colour and scent. Marble floors, gilt mirrors, low lamplight in the salons: it reads as old-world Parisian palace rather than boutique statement. Le Cinq, the three-Michelin-star dining room, is chandeliered and formal, the kind of room where the waiter count outnumbers the tables. The crowd is old money, new money, and people spending an anniversary they've been saving for.

Guests who want the full Parisian palace fantasy, an extraordinary dining room, and flowers as an art form.

The Peninsula Paris

The Peninsula occupies the former Majestic Hotel, a Belle Époque building from 1908, restored by the Peninsula group with a deliberate blend of French heritage detailing and Asian-inflected service and design touches, since this is the group's first European property. Interiors mix restored period plasterwork and grand staircases with cleaner, calmer furnishings than a typical Paris palace, and L'Oiseau Blanc, the rooftop restaurant styled after a 1927 biplane, gives it a view over the city's rooftops toward the Eiffel Tower that the George V simply cannot offer. It draws a similar wealthy international clientele but feels slightly less encrusted, more polished glass and brass than gilt and tapestry.

Guests who want the same neighbourhood and calibre of service with a rooftop view and a lower bill.

At $2,148 the Peninsula gives up the George V's indoor pool, health club, steam room and bar/lounge culture that comes with a full palace spa, though it has its own indoor pool and spa; the more concrete loss is the George V's particular bar scene and its three-Michelin-star Le Cinq, which the Peninsula's single Michelin-starred rooftop doesn't quite match.

The George V is the more beautiful place to sit still in, with its florist's-eye lobby and antique-dressed salons; the Peninsula is the more beautiful place to look out from, thanks to the rooftop over the city.

“Absolutely exquisite”

It was my birthday today and my partner reserved a table at this exquisite hotel and the legendary Le Cinq restaurant. From the moment we arrived, we were treated like royalty, nothing was ever too much trouble for the staff. We had dinner at Le Cinq, the hotel’s three-Michelin-star restaurant, and it truly deserves every single star. The food was extraordinary, and the service absolutely sublime. Frank was exceptio

Overall the stay was very pleasant until after the check out, I found out that lost my jacket at the hotel room, so I called them. It took them a couple of days to search for it and told me no. It was at the changing room.. but I was told they did not find it.
