The honest take

Hotel Arts is $598 a night against Cotton House's $1,114, and it outguns it on facilities with two pools, a spa, a beachfront position and a two-Michelin-star restaurant. Cotton House has the higher guest score, 9.1 against 9.0, but on a smaller base of 232 reviews versus 1,815. For the money and the view, Hotel Arts is the sounder booking; Cotton House is the one to pick if you specifically want a townhouse-scaled, historic Eixample address over a beach tower.

The look and the feel

Cotton House Hotel

Cotton House occupies the old Association of Cotton House Manufacturers building on Gran Vía, and it still reads as an institution rather than a hotel: high ceilings, a grand staircase, a library room with the hush of a private club. The designer Lázaro Rosa-Violán handled the interiors, mixing tweed, brass, dark wood and botanical prints with the original mouldings and cornicing left intact, so the historic bones show through the styling rather than being buried by it. There's a sixth-floor pool terrace and gym tucked above the rooftops, and the public rooms are scaled for reading a newspaper in an armchair rather than for crowds. It draws a quieter, design-literate guest who wants Eixample streets and Modernista architecture on the doorstep rather than sand.

Travellers who want a smaller, historically layered hotel in the middle of the Eixample grid, close to Modernista landmarks and quiet lounges rather than sand.

Hotel Arts Barcelona

Hotel Arts is Bruce Graham of SOM's steel-and-glass tower on the Barceloneta waterfront, one of the two twin skyscrapers that reshaped the skyline for the 1992 Olympics, and it still feels like a piece of civic infrastructure as much as a hotel: soaring atrium lobby, a Frank Gehry fish sculpture visible from the beach outside, floor after floor of glass looking over the Mediterranean. The rooms are contemporary and unfussy, built for the view rather than for period detail, and the scale of the place, two outdoor pools, a full spa, multiple restaurants including the two-Michelin-star Enoteca, is corporate-grand rather than intimate. It suits guests who want beach, big hotel machinery and open sea light over the tighter, more literary atmosphere of a converted city building.

Travellers who want beachfront scale, multiple pools, a serious spa and a Michelin-starred restaurant, and don't mind trading intimacy for size.

Cotton House, for all its charm, has no beach and nothing like Hotel Arts' two pools, spa or Michelin-starred dining; what it offers instead is a single rooftop and a much smaller, quieter building.

Hotel Arts is the more spectacular building and address, but Cotton House is the more beautiful room to actually sit in, since its converted 19th-century interiors have a warmth and specificity that a glass tower, however well sited, can't reproduce.

Cotton House Hotel

10/10

“Gorgeous property that feels 5 star.”

Very lux. The room was perfectly appointed and the staff is friendly and helpful.

2/10

“Beautiful property but terrible service”

This is such a shame as the hotel is gorgeous. Room is lovely. Aircon worked great. Linens were high quality. Stayed 3 nights in a Tafetan Suite on a cash stay. No points, no upgrades, etc. Pool is too small for the hotel so people sit on the deck making the space crowded and not very relaxing. After waiting 45 minutes for drink service at the pool today, I left the pool and went down to the bar to order drinks.

10/10

“Perfection”

Absolutely stunningly beautiful property. This property deserves 10 stars. The decor was pure perfection and the staff was exceptional.
