The honest take

Rosewood London is the one to book: £904 against £1,528, a 9.2 guest score across a genuinely large sample of 2,285 reviews, and a spa on top of it. 45 Park Lane charges a premium for a Park Lane address, Hyde Park views and a pool, with a much thinner review base of 134. Unless the Mayfair postcode and the park view matter specifically to you, Rosewood is the sharper spend.

The look and the feel

45 Park Lane

45 Park Lane is Candy & Candy's Art Deco-inflected reworking of a Mayfair block, all curved corners, dark wood panelling and low lighting pitched somewhere between a private members' club and a boutique bank. The rooms look straight across to Hyde Park, and the interiors lean masculine: leather, brass fittings, muted greys and browns. CUT by Wolfgang Puck occupies the ground floor, a steakhouse with a serious wine cellar and the kind of clientele who expense both. It suits a Mayfair evening rather than a lazy afternoon in.

Right for those who want a Mayfair address, Hyde Park views, and steakhouse glamour within walking distance of Oxford Street.

Rosewood London

Rosewood London occupies the former Pearl Assurance headquarters on High Holborn, an Edwardian Beaux-Arts building with a vast central courtyard you drive into, which sets the tone before you're even through the door. Tony Chi did the interiors: dark wood, brass, deep colour, a real sense of scale in the lobby and the Mirror Room restaurant, which lives up to its name with reflective surfaces and a grand, theatrical dining room. Rooms have Italian marble bathrooms and bespoke furniture, and there's a proper spa and sauna, unusual at this level in central London. Holborn itself is quieter and more workaday than Mayfair, closer to the City and legal London than the shopping crowds.

Right for those who want a grander, more theatrical building, a spa, and considerably more house for the money in a quieter part of town.

Rosewood, the cheaper stay here, has no pool, so anyone wanting a swim needs to go elsewhere; everything else, including the spa 45 Park Lane lacks, tips its way.

Rosewood London is the more beautiful building to actually be in: the courtyard, the scale of the lobby and the Mirror Room have a theatrical weight that 45 Park Lane's tidier, clubbier interior doesn't attempt.

Beautiful hotel and very spacious family room. Staff went above and beyond with our young family and the extra touches for the children were excellent. Breakfast was also amazing in the hotel’s restaurant.
